One of the best decisions I have made in my life was to home-school, my 5 children. Now complete after investing twenty-four years, I still feel the same and can see how the benefits greatly outweighed any trials we faced. Many people choose to home educate for different reasons; some for educational reasons, some religious reasons, and others for social reasons. My choice to home-school was a combination of all three.

Why I home educated

Being told that I couldn’t have children of my own as an adult, you can only imagine my joy when the miracle of getting pregnant came; and actually came quite easily. As a miracle mom, I strived to be the best one I could possibly be.

With a first-grader (and a newborn), I was unhappy with my oldest’s level of reading in the public school system. I made an appointment with her teacher, then later with the principal to discuss it. After that meeting and further investigation of the curriculum choices for our district, I knew that home education was our best option. Later I discovered that my first grader had been secretly praying that my heart would be open to home-schooling since I was adamantly against it when the subject was first discussed.

Having a mentor equals success

Thankfully, I had a very good mentor in my life at the time who also home-schooled her children. She was able to help me choose a curriculum to start with, set goals, plan my days, and even check in with me on a regular basis, to motivate and encourage me. I never felt like I was on this journey alone. She was there to share in my success when I had good days and was there to comfort me on those challenging days.

All graduated, all on their way!

All five of my children have now graduated from high school. As of 2021: two have graduated from college, one currently in college, one headed to college in the Fall, and one earned his masters’ degree. Their career/college choices range from nursing to graphic design, finance, sign-language interpreting, aviation, business & political science. We have participated in many high school sports such as basketball, cheer, and tennis; in addition to other high school activities like Civil Air Patrol, equestrian, acting/modeling, political groups, worship, youth groups, co-ops, speech & debate, and much much more. With each of my students’ having different interests and aspirations, we stayed quite busy. They were able to earn internships, scholarships, trophies/medals, a congressional nomination, etc … all because of home-educating.

  • Staying organized no matter what size ‘classroom’
  • Dealing with reluctant family, friends, or school districts
  • What about socialization?
  • Homeschooling vs doing public school at home
  • Is co-ops or outsourcing right for me?
  • How to educate with multiple ages
  • Is it legal?
  • Do I need a teaching degree?
  • How to do transcripts
  • What about sports?
  • Getting a college to notice?
  • and much much more.
